Moonshine the Rabbit with Obsidian and Beadwork

The Giveaway is here...i finally got things together enough to pull this off. The giveaway runs Jan 23rd thru Jan 30th. The winner will be announced Jan 31st. The obsidian in this pendant gives off a black or soft blue hue depending on how it catches the light. I included a playful little rabbit on this named "Moonshine" who doubles as a rabbit totem. The Beadwork on the chain picks up the tones in the obsidan.....this is very unique....the first of its kind for me design wise.

This pendant contains a beautiful BIG bumblebee jasper...it's reversible and can be worn

front facing or back facing---designed front and back....this was a challenge...especially

working with the twisted wire. Also I'm attaining Pro status on patina's...YAY!!!...for i have

struggled so. The back patina is even more refined than the pics show...i didn't re-photo...

wanted to get it mailed off. Here are some back images, as well as clasp images and a few more of the front.

Karma is my newest totem....he is a trout with a beautiful piece of Royston Turquoise. He is ready to swim to his new residence. To fully appreciate the symbolic meanings of fish, we must first consider their watery domain.

"Water holds ancient symbolic meanings dealing with the subconscious and depth of knowledge.
Water holds endless mystery to us – it represents that which is certainly there, but cannot be seen.
Water has also been known to be a womb symbol and as such, an emblem of birth, fertility and woman-ness. This association comes from many ancient flood myths, and the “from water springs life” concept.

The fish was sacred to the Greco-Roman mythology, where it held symbolic meaning of change and transformation. We see this in the myth of Aphrodite and Heros when they turned themselves into fish in order to escape from the ferocious Typhon.

In Christainity, the fish is a symbol of abundance and faith as observed in the Biblical story of fishes and loaves. There are also several Biblical references as Christ and his disciples being “fishers of men.” Here, man is represented as the transformational fish and the ocean is a symbol of the abyss of sin in which man finds himself.

Still have many pieces to photograph....will be posting them throughout the week. I managed to survive the Art Show....it was a very cold day....temperatures down in the 30's...don't now how we avoided pneumonia. We lost one of our cats Sept. 13th, she died of natural causes at home with us.... almost a month has passed...her passing has been difficult on us...she was almost 17 years old. We'll miss you Cinny.

Lessons learned these past few weeks----will try to do less planning....things don't always work out in life as well as in art...also quit beating myself up all the time...it's really unflattering....and I'm a pro at it. Pushing myslef too hard has a slow down effect...too much goes wrong. Murphy's Law....

   i am immensely proud of these new pieces....i knew what i wanted to do with them and they became the vision i carried in my head. These are experimental in nature....and deeply connected to my passion for the wild and the animal kingdom. When i say i put my heart and soul into these i mean it fully and totally. I hope these will be the forerunners of a long lineage of naturally shed antler pieces...i'm looking into using other natural animal materials as well. I've spent the month of July in learning mode....design challenges that were looming dark and foreboding worked themselves thru in time...until the solution came gently knocking on my minds cellar door. Etching and i have become friends....not best friends but were working on it....maybe i should rephrase...copper and I are best friends (copper etches like a dream)...sterling....a misbehaved problematic child....who will learn discipline for it's own good (good moments and bad)! More etched pieces will be arriving in August...as well as new design concepts....ready to take their first breaths. I promised my bronze Jack-a-lope on this post too.....so he'll make an appearance somewhere....he's very artistic (a painter) and he writes poetry when not nibbling carrots in the garden. His name....well he's unnamed to date so suggestions are welcome.

Spirit Deer ✭Fawn✭ Natural Forked Tine Antler Pendant

  This is a new pendant inspired by my love for the Deer and made from naturally shed deer antler. The piece I've used is the fork(between two tips) I've paired it with a lovely green chrysoprase, a protection stone. I have alot of different deer antler pieces coming soon....lots of experimenting going on here.

   The male deer will shed their antlers annually as a prelude to regeneration or re-growth of new ones. The antlers are composed of true bone. At first new antlers are covered by blood vessel filled skin called velvet. In late summer, early fall when their testosterone level increases the antlers harden and the buck rubs off the drying velvet. When testosterone levels drop early winter...the antlers start to shed. The entire shedding process takes 2 to 3 weeks to complete, with re-growth taking place over the summer. I've also learned that antler velvet is the only regenerating skin found in mammals. Antlers in velvet can grow up to 1" a day. Younger deer are usually the last ones to shed their antlers.

We have had squirrels in our attic....making all kinds of racket...so we have embarked on a squirrel relocation effort. Relocating them to an abandoned church near our house with lots of high grass and trees. I don't have any pics of our first capture(Secret Agent Squirrel)...but i do have pics of the second(007)....i wonder if the two of them realize they knew each other previously...squirrels are too smart...i'm sure they know. Relocating the squirrels was a difficult decision...I hope they'll enjoy their new surroundings.

3 of 4 pieces have made the cut....the 4th will be on the next update. We had so much rain today that i was beginning to think they called the Rapture a day early! *lol* My trusty 97' BMW with over 300,000 miles on it made it through some horrific water laden roads...i don't know how i made it home this evening but thankfully i made it. It has been a busy month....I was accepted into a local art show scheduled for October....that i applied for ealier this year. More details announced closer to show date. Out of 385 applicants they took 205 artisans....so this will be a first for me but really thrilling and quite a big honor for me. The Sacred Heart Ring is a knock out.....wears like a bad ass tattoo in sterling and Piranha Agate....i literally put my heart and soul into it and it's killer stuff. When i saw the cab with it's blood stains I had to do the Sacred Heart....

The next is part of my lost wax casting journey...a journey I'm begining to understand and really appreciate....i have found a passion in deer antlers....well it's more like a full blown obsession....so i hope i don't antler everybody to death over the coming months. They are all different...and will have different chain elements....as far as stones used and glass beads. Lots of deer antler inspired pieces coming in the future....all from natural shed's.....no animal was harmed if I use it in my jewelry. My husband and I have gone Vegan...except I'm still eating eggs and seafood, my husband only eggs....so i'm not sure to what degree were Vegan.....but it's a good thing! (atleast for us). Now for the ANTLERS!!!

✭✭✭Metal Moon and Stardust Pendant✭✭✭

I'ts been forever since I've had an update but that moment has arrived. I have 2 new items to share...and one that's still unfinished...not sure what's it's fate is going to be. I have ordered wider leather strips to work with if it's going to work out at all...maybe the next blog update. A new ring is almost finished, it's a beautiful Sparrow Ring....very different....with the name Blue Sky. My lost wax casting class is going alright...it's a bit of a challenge to work with the wax...quite an art for those who do it well...if i indeed have a talent for this it will take some time to cultivate...my learning curve can be somewhat slow. Also on Friday of last week we had visitors....a herd of wild turkeys. My camera was downstairs so i snapped a few pictures. They were very dinosaur like in the way they walked, ran and in height....they were more scared on me than I of them. They were headed towards the street but after their encounter with me they headed back into the woods. I also spotted our yard fox this week...i was in the garage soldering and he was sitting in the back yard....looking at me looking at him....that fur of his was the most exquisite color.....rust mixed with sunlight....breathtaking! I didn't get a recent pic of him though. :(

Year of the (Metal) Rabbit--Feb 3, 2011 to Jan 22, 2012

Well.....he's finally here (the rabbit that is) after a grueling photo session. Ok...my husband had to step in an shoot this....most of the great ones are his. Most of my pics form Friday were like a solar flare was going off on the face of the pendant....so shiny that it was taking away from the detail. I have always wanted to try a piece in Keum Boo ( a korean technique of bonding fine silver with 24k gold foil)...so this attempt was experimental in nature. The gold foil bonds to the silver by applying heat....it becomes one with the silver actually through an atomic exchange of some sort (Stephen Hawkings again so I'm not going there). Surprisingly....i got results....the bonding process which took some time and patience went very smoothy....the design adhered exactly as planned....which i thought was going to be problematic. Clearly this pendant turned out beyond expectations and became an exceptional pendant...rabbit in tow!

The Chinese New Year of the Rabbit began on feb 3rd of 2011. I've always been interested in Chinese astrology and have been studying it for many years now. I was born in Year of the Boar....not very glamorous but a good sign nonetheless. My husband is a Dragon...one the most coveted signs. The characteristics of the Rabbit are sensitivity, creativity and compassion. Preferring the company of others Rabbits are friendly and outgoing.

2011 is the Year of the Metal Rabbit...people born under this sign are considered to be more intense, resilient, determined and stronger than other rabbits. They may also be logical, highly strung and crafty. We have a pet Rabbit....Benjamin....here he is in his black and white rabbit splendor! He is such a sweet baby!

I may be a day late getting this blog ready but better late than never applies here. I had a sensational amethyst sage cab in my possession...it auditioned for this ring and made the cut.....the rest is history. I really don't want to part with this one but it going to be a good girl and offer it in my shop on a trial basis...the trial being can or can't i live without it! *ha*. The name just popped into my dinosaur brain....even before it was finished so I'm going with it. I did some research on nebula's....Stephen Hawking territory and completely beyond my comprehension so i settled for a defination.

Spiritual Path Sterling African Druzy Pendant

It's been quite a while since I've posted...been hibernating......winter blue's and all that! I look out the window and see so many critter tracks across our yard and feel bad for letting myself get into a funk when for them it's survival at it's very core. It's been so cold here....snow.....wet snow.....car doors that are frozen shut.....lost car keys (:() and cars encased in snow and ice aswell as broken car heater....brrrr!.
Started a new piece a few weeks ago....and was really unenthused with it until yesterday(during the finishing phase) when it came to life....its beauty and spirit came alive. It made the the process of struggling with the piece into a very rewarding experience. I've named it Spiritual Path....it now occupies a special place in my heart....it's the spiritual journeys we take in life that we may not understand at all when were on them but they serve to filter our inner beings into a more refined and attuned soul.... I have many, many spiritual touchstones: i have listed some below....I am much more attuned to St. Francis...as a daily spiritual draw....but I am fascinated by Buddhism and by the beauty of it's teachings. The Gospel of St. Thomas is also quite fascinating (gnostic gospels)....."Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up the stone, and you find me there."...amazingly beautiful and profound. Spirituality has been an interesting, continuing journey for me, very difficult at times.... but getting easier. I borrow from many spiritual ideologies but i can now fully and without hesitation trust in God's plan for me for today...i am where I am supposed to be....i have only to try to understand the lesson, to listen and to learn with compassion....and i believe as do the buddhist's through suffering comes enlightenment. I don't mean to get too heavy with this post....these things work for me...but everyone has to find their own spiritual fit in this universe.

✭✭✭First of all.....just getting over a weird bug and been really dragging last few days....my energy levels at an all time low...I'm a bit slower with my work and these two pieces are finally finished and got them photographed today whilst freezing my a@@ off outside....not the best thing for someone just getting over being ill. The first ones are the earrings....I'm in love with them....they were fun to make and watch evolve and I'm totally thrilled with the finished result. They are Right hand/Left hand earrings...

The American Indians highly regarded their war horses and often honored and protected them by painting various tribal symbols upon the animals body before a fight. Symbols varied from tribe to tribe but many were commonly used...each symbol having it's own specific meaning and purpose for which it was used, was determined by the nature of the dangerous job which the war horse would be asked to do. Right hand/Left Hand prints were outlined upon the horse's chest...which showed he'd knocked down an enemy. He protected his rider and was thus honored and respected for his contribution in the fight.

Our Weekend in Yellowsprings

Last Saturday we made our way up to YellowSprings for it's bi-annual Street Fair. It's a pretty crowded event...but the waether was awesome...so it was a splendid day. There's something for everyone there....music...food...dancing....animals.....drink....cute pets...artisan goods.....neat hippie shops...Ye Olde Trail Tavern (which is supposed to be haunted)...and the Little Art Theater . Almost forgot to mention I had my tarot cards read while we were waiting for a tabel at Ye Olde Trail Tavern....I'm supposed to rely heavily on my intuition in the coming days. Now for some pics ready or nor! Also Antioch College is in Yellow Springs! Unique college town! Sorry about the skips....in the above para...tried my damnest to fix them....no luck!

Friday afternoon fun! Serious fun!

♞♞♞Was away helping my Mom with the sale of her condo out of state...I've missed Blogworld and all my friends here but didn't have a very secure connection in Boca and didn't want to take the risk! It was a working vacation....had pretty good weather in general....did alot of packing and shipping and donating. Visiting the beach was great....collected some sea shells and did way too much eating! Great deli's there! The airport experience is always other planetary...but a necessary evil! Rush to wait....more rushing to wait...waiting in plane isles.... the bathroom treks which I try to avoid like the plague...a clothespin is helpful to close your nostrils shut! *lol* The anti-climatic snack event...and the wonderful feeling of being trapped in the "safe" beyond the security zone....OMG! Seriously...I had my camera but didn't think to document the airport experience...I do learn from my mistakes. Our kitties were elated to have us return...but a bit peeved as well. Our cat sitter is super....and does an excellent job...but it's not the same for the kitties! Lily my Savannah is in dreamland right now on my lap....Cinny our tiger striped has filled her belly with cat treats and is asleep at her daddy's feet! Feels like home again! *sigh* ♚♚♚

Raven Tweaked....re-oxidized and new dangles

Ok....i officially prefer Griffin's LOS to Midas....so i mixed the 2 together because my griffins has been acting weird....before that I re-worked his dangles....added tiny faceted thai fine silver cubes....that had become an archaeological relic on my basement bench.....I had come to terms with never using them until today....i thought I'd give them a try and surprisingly they worked better than the 2mm sterling silver beads.

Here are the new photo's. He is now officially shop ready!

My Torch, My Prize from the raffle, My Raven

Last month was particularly trying for me and i know I'm not alone. Everything required extra effort and energy....leaving me feeling like I couldn't catch up no matter what. My confidence levels were at an all time low. I know this post is late in arriving but know I did my best to get here and done tonight. First meet Flossie.....my torch ☟. We have made friends and have come to an understanding. Next....the bracelet I won in a raffle I heard about through SJA Forum. I have other photos of some of the lovely charms on the bracelet which i may post next time....i don't know how much photo room i have on this post.

Last but not least.....my Raven Totem Pendant. I will have him in my shop very soon. This piece was challenging and difficult to balance and design.....things i hadn't even thought of happened in this piece....not to mention adjusting to Flossie and various torch tips. I gave it my best...thinking of blackening him some more...we'll see. So without further ado......The Raven☛

Well......soldering is complete with the exception of a few jump rings. He will be oxidized and have his cabs set this evening. I didn't burn him up...even though it wasn't looking good for a day or two. ✪
   Raven was completed tonight 9/4....thankfully he's done(so many little problems)....there were some design problems but with some careful consideration and experimentation....i'm happy to say.....i'm proud of him! He will be photographed tomorrow and up on the blog saturday. Next piece will be earrings to go with the Prayer Feather's necklace....that was purchased locally. After that i need a simple uncomplicated project....we'll see what happens there!

   I have photos of my new torch to post along with photo's of a PMC bracelet I won in a raffle I entered. It was a raffle for a bone marrow charity....the bracelet just arrived in the mail on Saturday unexpectedly.

   ♘♘♘And also will get photo's of the raven posted when i get them taken. I like my torch....she seems pretty forgiving. I named her Flossie....because she's my work horse. I sold my Prayer Feather's Necklace locally....and have earrings to make that will match that piece. I have some 8mm faceted amethyst cabs arriving from Hong Kong soon for the matching earrings.

Friday Stuffola Excerpts from a birthday celebration

Wednesday was my birthday.....we met my Mom for brunch, came home and watched a very cool DVD....here's the link for it Allman Bros. Please Call Home Dvd. My husband had ordered it being a huge follower of their music, i learned alot about the band I had never known. Awesome Band!! Gregg Allman's Laid Back album (i had it on vinyl) a masterpiece!!!! The procededes from the sale of the Dvd help to support the Big House (the home the band and friends lived in for a time), which is now a museum. So check out the site.....
Later that night we dined Al Fresco at a local Italian restaurant....and the Peach Sangria's were delightful.......it was a lovely birthday even though we had a terrible thunderstorms throughout the day.

Sunday Morning MINI RANT Raven Update info.

OK......it's another Sunday morning. I decided to go through my blog list and post comments and investigate. My significant other, aka "the engineer" was fooling around on You Tube....here's what caught his fancy this morning (i must say it made me chuckle) don't say I didn't warn you and i hope i can get this link to work.*Engineer brain snack* .

Last night we went to the movies, The Girl Who Played with Fire, I just love that actress,Noomi Rapace, and the series in general. I can't fathom that Hollywood is going to ruin this for me by doing a remake (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) with Hollywood people. Please God No!!!! I adore Ellen Page but would hate to see her mess up her supernova career by stepping into this role. The girl from Twilight...No! Dakota Fanning....give me a break...No!...Daniel Craig is going to play the journalist....I'm actually at peace about this. If Hollywood redoes this that mean it's going to be inherently better? Some things are best left alone....you can't top this one Hollywood....Good Luck trying....You have my deepest sympathy.

I did check out Jane Fonda's blog this morning because it had some info about Katwise (an etsy seller) I have one of her cool a** sweaters. Maybe will add some more linkypoo's if i get around to it!

I've just completed a new pendant.....attached is an image of it in the very beginning stages. Struggling with a name right now...have some ideas but nothing concrete. In the photo....is the cabochon, a beautiful amethyst sage, the sterling back-plate and the empty bezel which is soldered on...those little spots inside the bezel are the melted solder chips. The second photo is the finished piece....complete with sterling silver bead drops....with a handcrafted feather. The last photo is of the entire piece worn....there are handcrafted feather accents fixed to the heavy sterling cable chain....the bead accents are a blend of sterling silver, amethyst and amber. I choose those accents because of the coloring in the beautiful cabochon. I'm hoping to have the pendant listed in my Etsy shop sometime on Friday. http://www.DalaHorse.etsy.com After completing this piece I will be returning to making totems....a wolf as well as a raven are on the back burner. I find my animal totems are the most fulfilling for me to craft. I have a black faceted spinel ordered for the raven and a tahoma jasper for the wolf.
